Kathryn Bonella lived in London for several years, freelancing for numerous English and American television programmes, magazines and newspapers. She returned to Australia in 2000 to work as a full-time TV producer. She moved to Bali in 2005 to research and write Schapelle Corby's bestselling autobiography, My Story. Subsequently she has written the international bestsellers Hotel K and Snowing in Bali.

This book allows you to get to know inmates as people and not only as criminals. It also paints a extremely descriptive picture of what life in Hotel K is really like and how corrupt and unfair the system is. This book brought tears to my eyes and also made my blood boil with anger, whilst at the same time, it allowed me to really appreciate all I have and not worry about the things I don't. I would recommend this book over and over again... and I will definitely be reading it a second time myself.

Du lebst mit Pädophilen, Mördern, Verrückten, Junkies und Dealern in einer Zelle oder bestichst genug Leute, um eine für dich zu haben. Wunder dich aber aber nicht, wenn die anderen sauer auf dich sind, weil sie sich plötzlich mit 20 anderen einen Raum teilen müssen. Und die Sanitäranlagen, sprich: die Toilette, findest du im Boden. Ein Loch, in das ihr alle gemeinsam reinmachen könnt.Der Drogenhandel ist hier drinnen fast so schlimm wie draußen, in den gerammelt vollen Besuchsräumen wird keine Rücksicht auf andere genommen und jede aufgeschobene Ehepflicht erfüllt. Falls du verstehst, was ich meine.Und an Silvester wird lange, lange gefeiert, Du kannst dich überall hin bewegen, trinken, tanzen und so weiter. Aber verscherz es dir mit niemandem, sonst könnte das böse für dich enden. Ein paar Jahre mehr auf dem Buckel oder ein Messer zwischen die Rippen, du hast die Wahl.Das sind nur ein paar der unglaublichen Geschichten, in diesem sehr flüssig geschriebenen Buch. Ich hatte die ganze Zeit das reinste Kopfkino beim Lesen, denn diese ganze Story klingt wie ein Drehbuch. Es ist unfassbar, wie es in dem Gefängnis auf Bali, ganz in der Nähe eines Strandes, zugeht. Es gibt Tatsachenromane, die durch ihren Stil unheimlich langweilen, egal wie interessant die Geschichte dahinter ist. Doch Hotel K. ist einfach toll geschrieben, niemals langweilig und aufregend von der ersten, bis zur letzten Seite. Ich habe mir gleichzeitig noch "Snowing in Bali" von Kathryn Bonella zugelegt und freue mich sehr darauf, es zu lesen.

I have read the book Hotel K because I was interested in getting more information about how the life in Bali jail is and I loved the book 📖 so much, that I have bought afterwards all her books. 📚. It is written in such a great and English that everyone can understand it easily, even when your mother tongue is not English. I am from Austria and for me the book was easy to read. The book gives you a perfect insight view into the life of the prisoners in Bali...and maybe it will open the eyes of some people that the paradise always has two faces. 😉...It is really worth to read it and I can highly recommend this book⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

After writing No More Tomorrows, telling the sad and devastating story of the young woman Schapelle, she now released the journalistic well designed story of Hotel K.For all visiting the island of Bali first impressions have the strength to last the whole range of stay: One of the most unique vegetations on earth, reminding the imagination of a would be paradise, beautiful and friendly people, neither loosing patience nor forgetting civilized respect, an art of cooking, deserving the attribute of divine and the beauty of nature, colourful as the brightest painting of a dreaming first class artist. All these pictures will vanish as soon as the visitor is ignoring the announcements made visible in the premises of immigration, informing that the possession of drugs will have serious consequences up to death penalty.Bonella interviewed many of the inmates of Hotel K., beside some poor local wretches a respectable amount of westerners, all victims of their own greed and misbehaviour or framed up by Balinese who wanted to get rid of debts. The morning after the evening I had finished this book I woke up a little sad , I felt as though I'd come home from Bali (not that I'd ever go) and left my friends behind.It's an eye opener to the real Hotel K and how money talks in Bali.The author did a fantastic job in writing this book, I was sad that it ended.

I bought this book after my first visit to Bali, and was amazed by just how corrupt the police and prison guards are. When we were there, we were pulled over and were clearly a target by a crooked cop. We had to pay $50 USD for basically having surfboards on our car,,,westerners = easy target. Be careful when on the Island of the Gods. The author really did her homework and became so close to the inmates, and came away with an incredible account of what it means to be locked up in Hotel k. Excellent read!

Probably the best prison book I have read. I couldn't put it down. If you like watching episodes of locked up abroad this is the real deal, well written with interesting characters to boot. While reading the book I felt like I was in the cell with these people. That is how descriptive this book is. Going to Indonesia " To Party " ? Read this before you go. It should be in everyone's carry-on bag.

This book is a great anti international drug- trafficking education program. Anyone who read it will never consider doing it for living. Eye opening book, shocking personal stories, all written wonderfully. Some fool gave this book one star and called it depressing. Is the book about some Indonesian notorious prison supposed to be funny and hilarious? Stupid idiot.Excellent book- informative, emotional and brutally honest. Highly recommend to all who want to find out about foreign prisons.

I've heard about this prison in Bali BUT reading the stories of inmates and their living in filth and torture, I can't believe the crime fitting the punishment, in some cases. Kathryn Bonella is an excellent author. She tells the story from inside the prison from inmate's some deserving a life in prison some not BUT the torture some recieve is a crime in its self. Anyone who loves reading about prison life I suggest this book. I appreciate my freedom but also I know never to make a decidion that could land me in such a place-I don't know how one does life in such a place .....enjoy this horror of details inside Hotel K.
